ANXIETY DISORDERS: Why you did not do anything wrong and why you could have not prevented it

While suffering from anxiety disorders, I asked myself what I did wrong because I got panic attacks. What if I wouldn’t have moved to another city? Why if I did not take this job? What if I had had a different personality? What if I had chosen a different path in my life?

Have you ever caught yourself thinking about questions like this?

Those questions are precisely one thing: useless.


As we all know, hindsight is 20/20. Of course, everyone can think of something they would have done differently in retrospect. But in the case of mental illnesses, it’s not just a matter of regretting a decision.

Sufferers from anxiety and/or panic attacks often wish their whole life would have been different because then they probably wouldn’t be trapped in a vicious cycle right now. It’s hard to stop once you start thinking about what could have gone better. It triggers deep negative emotions.

It is counterproductive to think about what you could have done differently in the past because TODAY, you have a completely different level of knowledge than BACK THEN.

You could not have done anything differently in the past. So what sense does it make to fall into old negative emotions today?

When you make a decision, you decide to your best knowledge at that moment. You can only use the knowledge that is currently available to you. You make the decision you believe is the right one. Otherwise, you would not make this decision.

And that is exactly why you could not have done anything differently at the time. You did nothing wrong.


In the same way, you could not have done anything differently in the past, you can also not change your past today. What happened did happen. 🤷‍♀️ If you still feel dragged down by negative emotions from the past, you haven’t reached your goal yet.

You can impact your present and shape your future. This is the part where you are in charge and have control. I believe there is the right therapy strategy out there for each person.

Sure, it can be a long way to find it, but if you don’t stay in the negative emotions and don’t give up, you can find it.
