Recipe Anti-Anxiety Dinner: „Orange Salmon“

Even when suffering from anxiety, it’s possible to have a lovely fancy dinner. I had good experiences with eating fish in the evening. Here is my favorite recipe.

Be careful: People react differently to food. The following facts and recipes helped me control my anxiety, but it is still my personal experience. Check with your doctor to be sure those foods are okay for you too.


RECIPE INGREDIENTS

For the „Orange Salmon,“ you need:

  • 4 pieces of salmon (or one big filet)
  • Ginger (3cm, sliced)
  • 1/2 orange (plus another one in slices)
  • Garlic (as much as you want)
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • Thyme
  • 650g Broccoli
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil

If you are based outside of America and are not used to measuring in cups, I recommend the cups and spoons from Hausprofi (AL). They are dishwasher safe, easy to store, and easy to handle 👍


WHY ARE THOSE INGREDIENTS GOOD FOR ANXIETY?

The main ingredients are either already scientifically proven to positively affect anxiety, or there are hints or a known correlation. Let’s break that down:

SALMON

The pink fish has a lot of high-quality protein and omega-3s, which are said to lower inflammation and anxiety. It provides vitamin B12, which is essential for the neurons and red blood cells to function. A B12 deficiency can cause almost any psychiatric symptom, including anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. Another study also found that eating salmon has a positive effect on sleep.

ORANGES

These fruits are the pinnacle of vitamin C which increases mental vitality, and antioxidants like vitamin C are also essential for your body to function.

And now the best: A study found that a combination of omega-3s and vitamin C (so yeah, salmon and oranges) can decrease the risk of pancreatic cancer by approx. 30 percent.

BROCCOLI

Its green florets are known to provide a lot of antioxidants and provide glutamine which can positively affect gut health, essential for the balance of neurotransmitters. Poor gut health can lead to an imbalance of said neurotransmitters and cause anxiety or depression.


STEP-BY-STEP RECIPE

1️⃣ Preheat the oven to 200°C (=392° F)

2️⃣ Blend ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and the juice of half an orange.

3️⃣ Add half of this sauce into a baking dish, place the salmon, pour the rest of the sauce over the fish, and top it with orange slices and thyme.

4️⃣ Put in the oven for about 20 minutes (can vary based on the oven).

5️⃣ Cut the broccoli into pieces and blend it with the butter, olive oil, and remaining spices. You can also add more garlic here if you like.

6️⃣ Cook the broccoli mash for about seven minutes (you can also fry it in a pan if you prefer).
